Process This project prioritised experimentation. I was interested in experimenting with telling a story on film that had no dialogue, and where inanimate objects came alive. Artist, theatremaker and filmmaker Andreea Tudoseand I co-directed this film, with Andreea playing the protagonist. We began with a story I created and told to Andreea, which she then told back to me. Through this telling and re-telling back and forth, and discussing our feelings and associations, the original story stayed the same but it’s meaning deepened and the protagonist’s emotional experience became more specific. The tone of the piece also emerged: we realised we were interested to create something that felt mythic, with elements of absurdity and black comedy.
Throughout the process we have been interested in the variety of different meanings and interpretations given to the story by different collaborators and audience members. Following on from this theme, with composer Justin Wright we found our way to the final score through a process of successive improvisations. We were also interested in creating a score that can be played live in the theatre by one cello (in the tradition of silent films).
